Staying In Touch With Family And Friends While You Are Abroad

Staying In Touch With Family And Friends While You Are Abroad
Going abroad is fun and exciting; it means that you will have many opportunities to meet people from all over, as well as having the opportunity to get to know yourself a little better. However, it also means that you are going to be apart from your family members and friends for long stretches of time. How can you stay in touch with them and keep connections open?

Social Media

Even if you are in a remote location, you can often head to a nearby coffee shop or other establishment to pick up an Internet connection for a while. Time zone won’t matter when posting a picture to the Facebook wall of your family members or friends to let them know how you are doing. Updating your statuses on a regular basis will make these important people feel as though they are going on parts of the journey with you, regardless of how far away they actually are.

Good Old-Fashioned Letters

Writing some good old-fashioned letters can help you to stay in touch with loved ones. If you are staying in once place long enough, you can receive them too. In the event that you do not, simply send letters to your loved ones. You can send postcards from the places that you visit, and you can all exchange pictures of the memories you are making on your own. Reading the handwritten words from a loved one and composing your own letter might be emotional enough to move the most even-keeled people to tears.

Shared Experiences

Even though you may be thousands of miles away, you can still have some shared experiences. For example, you can still go to mass on Sundays and know that your family is doing the same. Through having this connection with God, you are also connecting with your family members and friends. For those who are not religious, you could go to a particular tourist attraction while friends and family are looking at pictures of the place online. Another idea is to dine on a certain ethnic cuisine or type of food while your family is doing the same back home.

Video Chatting

While video chatting is never going to be exactly the same as spending time with individuals in person, at least you are able to see one another. When staying in a hotel during your journeys, set up a video chat with your family and friends. You especially want to try to do this if you are away during a holiday. Of course, constantly chatting in this scenario is probably going to be difficult, especially if you do not always have an Internet connection. Therefore, you can save this for special moments.

Sending Mementos

How can you stay in touch with your loved ones and keep connections open while you are traveling abroad?
You want your loved ones back home to get a sense of what you are doing abroad, so send them some little trinkets and gifts from time to time. Having a physical object that you once held can be special for so many people. They will be able to feel as though they explored the tourist attraction or went on part of the adventure with you, and they will always have this symbol of your love and devotion to them.

Being away from the people who you love can be difficult, but it does not have to be impossible. When you employ the aforementioned methods, you are really able to connect with these people back home and continue to strengthen your bonds with them.

Know What Your Kids Are Doing - Protecting Them From Online Predators

Know What Your Kids Are Doing - Protecting Them From Online Predators

Protect Your Children From Online Predators

Parents have a natural instinct to protect their children, and as a parent, it’s important for you to keep an eye on your children and know what they’re doing in order to protect them from harm. We love our children and want to keep them safe. Here are some things you can and should do to keep them safe while they are on the internet.

You need to make sure that you teach your child how to make smart decisions and how to be safe. But most importantly, you need to teach them to how to be safe both in real life and online.

There are plenty of online predators in the world today that prey on young children, and with social media and online forums becoming more and more popular among today’s youth, your children are more at risk.

This is why it’s very important that you not only talk with your child about the dangers of online predators, but you also set some guidelines and rules for their Internet use.

Set time limits.

If your child is using the Internet for social purposes, make sure you set a time limit. You can decide how much time is spent on these sites and let your child know that you’re doing it for their protection.

Keep the computer public.

Make sure that your family’s computer is in a public room in your home and that your child is not allowed to use the computer in their own bedroom or separated from anyone else. This way, you can keep an eye on the sites they visit.

Make rules.

Let your child know that you are willing to allow them to join a social network as long as they are friends with you and as long as you have their password. This way, you can monitor who they’re talking to, what they’re saying and how they’re using these sites. You can then be aware of anything out of the ordinary that requires your immediate attention.

Keep it private.

If your child has a social account, make sure that their account is set to private. This way, their profile is not publicly viewable to anyone and only their friends can see what they post. Plus, this also makes their name unsearchable.

Teach them to be cautious.

Children are naïve, but it’s important you teach them about the dangers of online predators. Let them know that not everyone they meet online is who they claim to be, and that they should never “friend” anyone they don’t know. Tell them that they should never share intimate details about themselves with online strangers, and they should never under any circumstance meet someone in person that they met online.

Keep an eye out.

Even with your rules and guidelines in place, it’s important to keep an eye on your child and their use of the Internet. Make sure you pay attention to the sites they’re visiting and who they’re friends with online. This can help you realize that your child may be in danger or may be making poor choices (such as abusing drugs or alcohol), and it can help you create a solution before the situation gets out of hand.

Why You Need To Protect Your Online Identity

Why You Need To Protect Your Online Identity
Many people seem to sniff at the idea that their online identity is something worth worrying about. After all, what damage can a face book, a tweet and a pinterest really do right? WRONG! Today’s modern world exists primarily in the virtual sphere, and with increasingly intelligent and sophisticated technology, our online identity can be used to mar your reputation, break into your accounts, create passports, buy houses and travel the world on credit cards all by virtue of your online presence.  There are many reasons why you should protect your online identity and today we are going to go through the top 4.

1.)  Its yours

Sounds obvious, but people looking for you online are likely to type your name into their social networks. What turns up, all depends on who owns and manages your online identity. Today, everybody Googles – so that means potential employers, business partners and associates, long lost friends and family members, colleagues, investors, estate agents: pretty much every one you will ever deal with could potentially Google you and find information about you. Therefore, its important that when they do find you and interact with you – it is you that is responding and not someone else.

2.)  It’s a gateway to a real identity

Identity theft is no small, laughing matter. Most social networks are linked to each other and someone accessing just one of your social networks can quickly reveal a host of information that can be replicated to create a real life identity in your name. A real life identity in your name can then have access to everything anyone else does, with none of the risks associated and that means large and small purchases, debt, credit, passport and more. Why take the risk? Many people make the mistake of thinking only “important” people get hacked, however this philosophy is as weak as believing that only rich people have their homes broken into. Criminals are opportunists more than they are strategists and therefore protect yourself as much as you can because your online identity is a gateway to a real and false identity in your own name, and also gain access to your personal banking information.

3.)  Its your reputation

There is a common saying that words once said cannot be taken back, and the same is true of any information that you are streaming out onto the internet. Some people create online identities and hack into social media accounts only for fun, and this can create havoc with your online reputation and your personal computing equipment. An unprotected identity is a vulnerable identity, opening up your computer and Smartphone to viruses and creating an easy platform for a person to promote questionable websites and content in your name.

4.)  Its very difficult to solve the problem once it has started

Protect Your Online IdentityProtecting your identity is also a good idea because if you protect it, then hopefully you will never have to go through the painstaking process of having to solve a problem with it. Once your social media and bank accounts have been compromised, you will need to spend many hours on the phone, filing complaints, explaining the situation to any people who have interacted with you and also you will have to change passwords and pins. Save yourself the trouble, and keep your identity protected instead.
