The
new year has already brought about the promise of new and innovative things in
the tech-world. From cars to computers to mobile applications, there are a
whole lot of things that have people in the tech world buzzing. Here is a list
of the top five things in technology to look forward to in 2013.
Vine
It seems like a golden age for social media sites, with more and more websites
and applications popping up each day. The one that has been catching the most
momentum lately is Vine, which allows users to create simple, six-second
videos. There have been video-based social applications in the past, but the
rising popularity of Vine is in its simplicity: users can record video right in
the app, and it is super-easy to splice together footage to create a simple and
succinct end-product. The fact that Vine has recently been acquired by Twitter
means that it is all the more easy to combine both social media platforms to
create a kind of sharing cohesion. The Vine community is growing, and it would
be a good idea to get on it ASAP.
Cloud Computing
Although “cloud computing” is by no means a new concept, it has been
popularised in the past two years by Apple iCloud, Microsoft SkyDive and Google
Drive so that more and more people are using it on a daily basis, both for
personal and group use.Many companies rely on computers to complete a bulk of their business and to communicate both internally and externally, and in an increasingly technologically savvy society, more and more people are bringing their personal devices into the workplace to do their jobs. Some workplaces have found that this increases productivity amongst their employees, and have implemented a BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) policy. This allows employees to use their own laptops/tablets/smartphones to do their work, in conjunction with a cloud system which holds all the company’s applications and documents.
Cloud computing is fast becoming a can’t-live-without technology, and are integrating with most other devices, as discussed below.
Windows 8
The latest operating system by Windows is said to be a game changer, and a
complete overhaul from previous Windows OS. Launched late last year, Windows 8
has an entirely different look, decked out with a Modern User Interface that is
designed to be used both on a touchscreen and with traditional mouse and
keyboard. The change in interface coincided with the release of the Microsoft
Surface, and will reportedly work better on their newer tablet release, the
upcoming Microsoft Surface Pro.

Google Glass
What has been a rumour for years is finally becoming a reality in 2013. Google
Glass takes computer portability to the next level -- it is literally a
computer that you wear on your face, in the form of glasses. While it has been
taking some flak for being silly-looking, and a fashion faux pas, there is no
doubt that Google Glass is innovative and will make society rethink the way we
view and retrieve information.
Google Glass promises to include most of the features found in Android phones: it will have a cloud-based connection to Google features such as Maps, Hangouts, Plus and so on, as well as the ability to take photos, record video, check the weather, and issue reminders. Google Glass is set to be released later this year, and is eagerly awaited.

PlayStation 4
The official announcement for the PlayStation 4 was given by Sony recently, and
has sent gamers reeling. The hotly anticipated gaming system is slated to be
released later this year, and seems to place a lot more focus on social
aspects, rather than improved gaming. The system is planned to have a social
network site geared to connect gamers on a Facebook-level, which is quite a feat.
They’ve also partnered with Gaikai, a cloud gaming platform, which will mean
easier sharing of media, trial games, and a more comprehensive backlog of
PS1-PS3 games.
The general reaction post-announcement has quite mixed, but we will all have to
wait until its release and some hands-on reviews before it can be determined
whether or not PS4 will change the face of gaming the way that Sony is
intending.
